Veni, Vidi, Bici (Part Two)

What is this?

nancyhowardThe Atlantic Coast Cross-Country Bike Tour is a 2,528 mile ride starting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on April 21, 2015 and ending in Bar Harbor, Maine on June 12, 2015. Thirty women, from all over the U.S. and the world, mostly age 50 and older, will bike an average of 50 miles a day (the shortest day is 38 miles and the longest is 97).

The ride is arranged by a company called WomanTours, and is fully-supported, i.e. they carry the heavy bags in a van, provide a SAG car to help with flats, hydration and exhaustion, and prepare home cooked meals in a mobile kitchen. We will sleep in hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts. No camping for this old princess.

The route will take us up the Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina coasts and then inland through Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Then we head back to the coast in New Hampshire and Maine.

I have been in Florida for the past five weeks, training for this ride. I feel ready for the challenge. I may not ride every mile, but I will give it my best effort.

I am doing this ride as a fundraiser for Outer Cape Health Services (OCHS) building fund. Since I retired three years ago, I have served on the Board of this essential healthcare provider, a federally qualified, primary care community health center, non-profit, with three locations on Cape Cod. OCHS is the go-to health care provider for the eight communities of the Outer Cape. No one is turned away.

We are in the middle of a much needed building and expansion program. For example, our Wellfleet facility operates in a circa 1962 Sears Roebuck catalog building, one of the few still standing in the U.S. Our building plans include a new building for the Wellfleet health center, a new building in Brewster and a new building in Harwich. Demand for our services continues to grow and we need to expand in order to meet this demand.

If you would like to contribute, a penny, a dime, a dollar a mile – or any other amount, please hit the Donate tab and you can donate directly to OCHS.
